Nikku reveals to the other Magistrates that he found a small chest hidden in the dojo of the Magistrate’s Palace (explained in more detail in a previous post). Inside the small chest was a brass key engraved with the letters “HoFS”, a flower foreign to Rokugan that was attached to a poem from an author unknown to Tsukiko, and a brass Cryptex.
Kagemori hypothesized that the engraving on the key stood for “House of Foreign Stories” given the foreign flower and, likely, foreign poetry that it was attached to.
Referring to the dossier given to the Magistrates, they discovered that the House of Foreign Stories was run by a gaijin named Magda. So, the party decided to pay Magda a visit. Tsukiko turned on the charm and hit it off with Magda, who was a very willing participant in the conversation. Tsukiko and Nikku retreated to the second floor’s private chambers to enjoy tea while talking further with Magda, and listening to her stories. During this conversation, Tsukiko cleverly elicits Magda’s favorite love poem, which is word-for-word what is written on the poem found in the dojo, and Magda confirms the gaijin poet’s identity.
When presented with the poem and flower Tsukiko brought with her to the House, Magda could not conceal her emotion. Overcome, Magda attempted to cover her mouth while she teared up from its mere sight. She confessed that she had written that poem and given that flower to Ashidaka Naritoki, the former Emerald Magistrate of Ryoko Owari, and that they were secretly lovers. The key was given to Naritoki to provide him access to the House during odd hours. Tsukiko offered the flower, poem, and key back to Magda, for which she was very grateful, and hesitantly returned the favor by providing the Magistrates with the “Journal of Ashidaka Naritoki”. She explained that she found it under his pillow after he died, and hoped it would assist them in finding Justice for Naritoki.
Before leaving, Nikku asks Magda if she knew the name of the flower. Magda explains that it was “their” flower, referring to Naritoki. It had sentimental value to her as far back as she could remember. Naritoki somehow obtained the rare, foreign flower for her as a gift after she told him a story involving one of her only memories of her father, where he gifted her with the delicate bloom. It became a tradition to give each other the flower on special occasions. She explained that her people had many names for the flower, including “Sanguinary”, “Thousand Leaf”, and “Yarrow.”
She could not explain the Cryptex, and stated that she had never seen it before. She was unable to offer a possible clue to its solution, nor was she able to guess at what could be inside.
